How do I know counseling will do any good for me?
Actually, that question is a powerful issue to examine when beginning counseling. A willingness to participate is really all that is required.  If you are willing to explore yourself, your relationships, your attitude and approach-you are better than 75% there.

What if I don’t want to talk about the past, and about things that were bad for me?
There is no “supposed to way to be” about counseling, or about talking about one’s past. If a therapist is insisting you talk about your past and you don’t want to, find another therapist. If the past upsets you and you are looking to understand how it continues to effect you, then it will be wise of you to notice how you are impacted in the present by your uncomfortable past, and how you are presently adjusting to it.  Forgiving something that happened in the past is different than forgetting the past. Typically, we don’t forget about the past until we forgive it. If we do forget the past before completing it, the past will continue to operate in our present and be disruptive.

How long do I have to come to sessions before I feel better?
It’s a good rule of thumb to participate in 6-8 sessions, and then re-evaluate with your therapist what you have accomplished and what you would like to continue to work on while in therapy.  Having said that, some people receive all they need in one or two counseling sessions, while others may find regular contact useful to stay focused and grounded.  Therapy and counseling actually are conversations to have you begin to think more clearly for yourself, to again learn to trust yourself, and to practice developing the skills and mastery required to heal yourself.
