Family Support Groups
Addiction affects more than just the individual of the diagnosis- it leaves a lasting imprint on the family, friends, the community, and now the nation as this epidemic grows.
As an individual develops recovery tools and life skills, a recovery support system is crucial and critical. This support system need a better understanding of these skills too. However, it extends past support, but education, the development of empathy, the skill to support without enabling the behavior the disease of addiction encourages.
Education about the disease of addiction and how it manifests into behaviors and certain ways of thinking is also a key component for a support system to understand. The individual in active addiction will learn the science behind addiction in treatment, but who informs their social influences? Family support groups, community support events, and any kind of involvement in the recovering community is such an underestimated part of the recovery process.
